Family run business

Home Sweet Home is a family business run by husband & wife, Joe & Laura. With the showroom recently opening in Barnstaple, we wanted to introduce the owners to help you get to know the company and the team better.
Joe has worked for many years in the kitchen industry, gaining experience from both the retail and manufacturing side by managing a kitchen showroom and becoming an area manager for a British manufacturer. Laura has also worked in the kitchen industry having previously worked as a marketing manager for a kitchen & bathroom showroom.

Read the interviews below to learn more about both outside of the showroom.

Where are you from?

Although I have moved around a lot in my years, I have always been a “North Devon Boy”. For most of my childhood, I lived in either Braunton or Georgeham, before moving to Woolacombe. Currently, I live in Landkey.

Favourite display in the showroom?

For me, it’s our stunning window display, showcasing clean lines, modern colours, with a traditional shaker door. I put a lot of design ideas in this display, with the large canopy and the freestanding island. However, I am a big fan of modern “Scandi” kitchens, and so I am also a big fan of the H-Line Sutton Inkwell with the brick wall.

Favourite movie?

I am a big fan of epic movies, Braveheart, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings trilogy. My Favourite though has to be Last of the Mohicans, I have fond memories watching this when I was younger with my Grandad. I find the music moving.

Describe the perfect day?

I have two; a hot Summers day, long walk, stumble across a country pub for a meal. My second day is for the Winter with cold weather, where you stay in, watch movies and cook a roast dinner. Most of the best days revolve around food for me.

What are your prize possessions?

This would have to be the showroom, I don’t have many possessions at home, as most of my purchases are edible. To have my own showroom has been a passion for a long time, and a lot of work and effort went into it.

Hobbies outside work:

Walking, watching movies, and eating… usually, walking to food, eating, then walking back to watch a movie… then more food.

Have you always been in the kitchen trade?

Not always in the kitchen trade, I trained as a plumber originally before becoming a plumbing surveyor for a wetroom company, specializing in wetrooms for less abled, to give them more independence. This was a satisfying role.

I started with Kitchens when I was 23, where I joined Magnet in Barnstaple. After 6 months, I was approached by a large local Builders Merchants and became the Showroom Manager, before becoming Assistant Branch Manager a few years later. After a successful 2 years, I was approached by a National Manufacturing company, where I relocated to the Midlands to run an area of 90+ showrooms and where I got to design showroom displays. I learnt a lot of design tips and tricks in my last position.

Do you have any pets?

We have a tiny, very fluffy, moggy called Noelle. When we adopted her from the RSPCA she was called Princess and she certainly lives up to that name! Loki is our pup, a mixture of bordercollie and miniature poodle. Extremely freindly & cuddly.

Favourite display in the showroom?

I’m quite torn between our window display, I love the ‘Connery’ cocktail cabinet, or I’d choose our coastal mist Hardwick door. The blue displays are so striking with some nifty storage solutions.

Best holiday you’ve ever been on?

Any trip I’ve been on to the USA has been fantastic, I love traveling both the West & East Coast. I’ve been through Narnia like snow scenes to beautiful sunshine along the coast, stunning. I’m a huge Disney fan too, so of course I like visiting the Disney parks on both coasts, at Halloween time its great fun!

Favourite place to visit in the South West?

I love Croyde Beach, it’s been my favourite beach since I was a kid. Its great for wintery walks and a cold swim in the summer.

Describe the perfect day?

It depends on how I’m feeling, I can’t sit still for long so a trip to a theme park is perfect. If I’m need of a relax, it always involves a movie marathon or a good thriller tv show.

Favourite movie?

Die Hard, it’s a great action movie in the summer and the ultimate Christmas movie!

Favourite time of the year?

I’m all about Autumn and Winter; cosy jumpers, hot chocolate and Christmas movies. We’ll be offering guests mulled wine and mince pies during our Christmas Late Night opening so I’ll be in my element.

If the world ends tomorrow, what would you choose as your last meal?

Lobster mac’n’cheese, really anything with cheese!

We both look forward to meeting you at the showroom soon. If you’re ready to discuss your new kitchen, contact us today and book your free design survey.
